I proudly present my portfolio of underwater images which I’ve been shooting ever since 2006. The collection shows a variety of animal life and reef structures in different locations around the world.

Today I chose to dive Double Reef, infamous for its larger animals such as baracuda’s, turtles, tarpons and, if you’re lucky … dolphins or sharks! It took us about 20 minutes to drive to the dive spot where we found the waves too high to easily enter the water, and the rocks full of sea-urchins.

I had experienced an issue with sea-urchins before, where it took me 6 months before all spines where out of my feet. That hurts big time! Finally, I agreed to drive a little further up north in order to dive Grote Knip, or Kleine Knip, a beachfront divesite with very easy access. However, due to my navigational skills we ended up in the upper north of the island, far away from civilization, as far as you can speak of any here (drunken dutchies).

Playa Jeremi is known for its coral structures, which gave me the opportunity to try out my Nikon 16-35mm lens for its first tropical water shootout. I left the strobes at 5500K in order to get me some colorful blues in the background. Below you can find some examples (needs more post-processing).

Alright, nothing spectacular, but good testing results! Tonight we will visit Punda and Otrabanda for our final dinner and Pina Colada at the Pontjesbrug!

Bon bini!

Vandaag was het weer mijn beurt om een duikje te maken. Om 9:00 stond ik bij de duikschool mn setje op te bouwen. Vervolgens reden we met het busje richting superior producer, het wrak waar Jaap eerder deze vakantie al was geweest. Een leuke duik en ja, eindelijk…. een schildpad! Gevolgd door een flinke barracuda maakte de duik compleet.

‘s Middags heeft Jaap nog een duikje gemaakt bij de tugboat terwijl Loïs en ik lekker zijn gaan zwemmen in het zwembad. ‘s Avonds hebben we weer lekker gegeten bij Tinto.

Today was my real first Solo Dive, which was really relaxing! Carrying an extra pony bottle, which allows me to ascend from 40 meters, I only planned my dive between 5 and 10 meters in order to test my Subal Housing including Lee 444 gelatine filters. This means I have put the color correction filter on my strobe.

By default an Ikelite DS-125 strobe has a color temperature of 4800 Kelvin, but with the Lee 444 filters it bumps it up to approx. 5500K, which means richer (Mustard) Blue tones in any open water picture. I have not been able to get a good shot today, but have some examples which proves the hypothesis.

We also visited Punda (Willemstad) in the afternoon for a good Stoba Karni!

Today I wrapped up my Solo Diving Certification!

I know it is serious business diving solo, however the buddy-system is not a definite secure system as well. I have been trained TDI/SDI Solo Diver by Peter at Scuventures, who is an experienced instructor, and I was able to meet all the requirements by demonstrating my diving and emergency skills, and passing the written exam.

I will get into more detail later onwards, however diving solo means you’re carrying an extra tank or pony bottle to supply air at any given time. It’s like a walk in the park on you’re own with a buddy closer than you can imagine. It’s the best thing for any underwater photographer!

Today Loïs experienced her first snorkeling adventure!

She did very well snorkeling the Tug boat wreck, and she enjoyed it to the max! However, her daddy screwed up the pictures by leaving his camera in Manual Focus (again).

We hebben toch maar even voor een paar dagen een auto gehuurd. Lekker een beetje rondcrossen over het eiland! We hebben nog netjes gevraagd voor een autostoeltje voor de kleine….. Autostoeltje? Wat is dat? Nee hoor, moeders op de achterbank, kind op schoot en gaan!

Vandaag besloten we naar Willemstad te gaan. Even wat souveniertjes scoren, echte Stoba eten en een terrasje pakken.
De souveniertjes waren snel gekozen en op het terrasje hebben we gezellig zitten kletsen met een ander Nederlands stel. Ongelooflijk hoeveel aanspraak je hebt met zo’n kleine op schoot!

We hadden gehoord dat de lekkerste Stoba (een echt Antilliaans gerecht) te krijgen was op de oude markt, dus besloten we daar eens heen te gaan. De oude markt zag er uit als een grote vreetschuur met tafels en banken die je deden denken aan het Duitse Oktoberfest. Over de gehele lengte stonden oude omaatjes in grote pannen te roeren. We werden bij anderen aan een tafel geschoven en kregen een vodje in ons handen geduwd wat een menukaart voor moest stellen. Voor 40 gulden (ongeveer 20 euro) hebben we met z’n tweetjes de lekkerste Stoba gegeten die we ooit geproefd hebben! Om de Stoba wat te laten zakken nog even een terrasje gepakt. Toen we naar de auto liepen kwamen we er halverwege achter dat Lois haar slippertje was verloren. Omdat de parkeertijd bijna op was liep Jaap alvast naar de auto en ging ik met Lois terug om haar slippertje te zoeken. Gelukkig vonden we ‘m terug en Lois lachte verlegen toen ik de slipper voor haar neus hield. Bij het appartement hebben we lekker een paar (rosé)biertjes broodje worst genomen en zijn wederom vroeg naar bed gegaan. Als Lois zich niet aan onze tijd aanpast, passen wij ons wel aan

Vandaag even een verslagje in het Nederlands hoor
Vanochtend zijn we even lekker met drietjes naar het zwembad gegaan. Ik heb jaap een lesje babyzwemmen gegeven en daarna zijn we even op een ligbedje gaan liggen. Heel lang hielden we dit niet vol… wij zijn niet echt het type: liggen en bakken. Dus maar terug naar het appartement en even een broodje eten. Lois laat regelmatig zien dat ze al een hele grote meid wordt! Ze draait zelfstandig van haar rug op haar buik en ‘kletst’ de hele dag door! Als ze slaapt hebben we even rust. Haha!

Vanmiddag was het mijn beurt om te duiken. We maakten een duik bij de Tugboat. Een heel schattig wrakje op een meter of 5 diep, gevolgd door een prachtig rif. Een mooie duik van 72 minuten! Na de duik zaten Jaap en Lois al op me te wachten bij Zanzibar. We namen even lekker een pizza en besloten op tijd ons bedje in te kruipen.

Good morning!

Yesterday, I planned two separate dives; one on a wreck: Superior Producer, and another night dive at the house reef Jan Thiel bay. A brief history on the wreck ..

The day the Superior Producer sank in 100 feet of water just outside the busy port of Willemstad, off the island of Curacao, the people of the island cheered. Almost immediately, blue jeans, cotton T-shirts, sheets and crates of whisky began to wash up on shore. The 240-foot cargo ship’s hold was filled at the time with clothes and drink, headed for Venezuela for the Christmas shopping season. In fact, it had been greedily overloaded and had left port against the advice of its captain, whose dire warnings became reality almost before the crew had finished waving good-bye to the people on the shore. The ship’s cargo shifted in the ocean swells, and the Superior Producer sank quickly and on an even keel. Local divers had a great time in their “rescue” efforts “recovering” the cargo. In just a few days, everyone on the island was dressed in new clothes (those who couldn’t dive bought items at an extremely discounted rate at the local markets) and roaring drunk.

After diving the wreck, we’ve got back to the diving centre (Scuba Do) and cleaned up our gear. I planned a night dive later that day with Harry. He’s here in order to complete his Dive Master certification, and is almost done with the studying . We found several Moray Eels and one of ‘m allowed close proximity because of my Sola 600 red diving light.

After the night dive we ate tenderloins at Tinto, a le-gen-da-ry Argentine restaurant!

Bon dia!

We started up slowly today. Loïs is still waking-up in the middle of the night, because of the 5 hours time difference.

While Jaap’s fixing his gear for an afternoon dive, Lois and I went to the swimming pool. Loïs really likes her big orange floating tire which she uses to balance herself and move forward. We ate some bread at the apartment and while Loïs took a nap, Jaap went off to the diving school for his dive at Barbara Beach.

Jaap got back after two hours, where he mentioned that the diving conditions were less optimal than before, although the murky waters he managed to take picture of a Spiny Lobster, which seems to be a rare sighting these days, because they’re a good meal.

We had a belated dinner at the Zanzibar restaurant where we enjoyed a Grouper Pasta meal, and several Polar beers!
